This is a "treasure" coin recovered in 1986, 176 years after being lost aboard the Admiral Gerdiner, whichwas bound for India with these coins for payment to workers in Bengaland Madras. The ship sank in a severe storm, carrying with it sevencrew members. The coins were tightly wrapped and stowed in securewooden casks, a total of 48 tons, and thus were preserved from theeffects of salt water.
